During the first year of life, babies begin to learn the basics of moving themselves, and the skills they need for coordinating hand-to-mouth movements and holding objects. The chart below is a general guideline of what can be expected during your baby's first year.

Physical Development - Birth to 1 Year

3 Months
|
At this stage most babies begin to:
- Use sucking reflexes
- Raise their head when lying on their stomach
- Hold head up for a few seconds
- Lift their head and chest, while lying on their stomach
- Make fists with their hands
- Play with their hands by touching, pulling, and tugging
- Enjoy repeating their body movements (example: swinging or waving an arm)

3 Months
to
6 Months
|
By this time babies have become stronger and have more agility. At 3 to 6 months most babies begin to:
- Roll over
- Push body forward while lying on their stomach
- Pull up by holding on to furniture (example: side of the crib, coffee tables, chairs, etc)
- Reach out for objects
- Grasp objects, and put objects in thier mouth
- Associate objects and actions (example: shaking rattle produces noise, batting hands against mobile produces movement, etc.)

6 Months
to
9 Months
|
At this stage of development most babies become mobile and child-proofing a babies surroundings becomes a necessity. During the 6 to 9 month age is when most babies start to:
- Crawl (not necessarily on hands and knees)
- Pull objects towards themself
- Move objects from one hand to the other

9 Months
to
1 Year
|
Most babies, by the time they reach 9 months to 1 year of age can:
- Sit unsupported
- Stand without holding on
- Make walking movements with aid
- Pick up objects using their thumb and one finger
- Roll and throw objects such as a ball
- Drop objects and pick them back up at will
